Yes, Orange County schools are strong overall, and they are one of the top reasons families move here. The Orange County Department of Education supports 28 school districts with more than 600 schools and about 450,000 students countywide. But strength varies a lot from one district to the next, and even from one attendance area to the next. If schools matter to your move, start your home search with the district, not just the city name.
Irvine Unified is the county's headline district. With 45 schools and about 38,000 students, it ranks number one in California in science, math, and English language arts among public districts serving 35,000 or more students, a spot it has held for ten straight years. In 2026, Irvine students beat statewide proficiency rates by 32 points in math, 29 points in science, and 25 points in English. On the latest U.S. News high school list, Portola High ranked 61st in California, University High 64th, and Northwood High 97th. If top test scores are your priority, Irvine sets the bar for the county.
Capistrano Unified serves the south county, including Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Ladera Ranch, and Rancho Santa Margarita. It is one of the largest districts in the county, and its high schools also place well statewide. Tesoro High ranked 103rd in California on the latest U.S. News list, and San Juan Hills High ranked 128th. Capistrano is a good fit if you want strong schools paired with south county coastal and master planned communities.
Closer to home for many of my buyers, Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified serves Placentia, Yorba Linda, and parts of Anaheim, Brea, and Fullerton. The district has about 34 schools and roughly 22,500 students. On 2025 California state tests, the district scored in the 87th percentile statewide, and SchoolDigger ranks it 277th out of more than 1,500 California districts. Inside Yorba Linda, Lakeview Elementary scored in the 96th percentile, Bryant Ranch Elementary in the 95th, Fairmont Elementary in the 94th, and Rose Drive Elementary in the 93rd. Yorba Linda High scored in the 90th percentile statewide, with about 76 percent of students meeting reading standards.
Other districts deserve a close look too. Los Alamitos Unified is smaller and tightly focused, and Los Alamitos High ranked 173rd in California on the U.S. News list. Saddleback Valley Unified serves Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills, and nearby communities with 33 schools. Newport-Mesa Unified serves Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, including Corona del Mar High. Garden Grove Unified is one of the county's larger districts and serves a diverse, largely first generation community; Grove High ranked 169th in California. Tustin Unified has 28 schools and about 21,300 students, serving Tustin and nearby areas.
Here is my most important tip, and it applies everywhere in the county: never assume a school based on a city name or a listing description. Attendance boundaries do not always follow neighborhood lines, and boundaries can change. Before you make an offer, check the district's school locator with the exact address, and call the district if anything is unclear. A home one street over can feed into a different school.
Great schools also help sellers. When I list a home in a top rated attendance area, I make sure that information is front and center, because many buyers start their search by school, not by neighborhood. Whether you are buying for your kids or for future resale value, the strength of Orange County schools is one of the county's biggest long term advantages.
If schools are driving your move, tell me which districts are on your short list and I will help you match homes to the right attendance areas.
